'Then came the Beatles!' — how one TV appearance altered music, communities and a country

The Beatles arrive in America

The Beatles on February 9, 1964, by over 73 million Americans played between two teams of six songs, "The Ed Sullivan Show" is already hidden. The biggest blow to the team at that moment - "I want to hold your hand" - (it was a thing before) exposed, the viral spread throughout the United States and on local radio has been relentlessly.

Soon after the song, John, Paul, George and Ringo on February 7 at New York's Kennedy airport, thousands of screaming and crying fans climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard charts challenge Jan 18

But because of the large number of Americans who tuned in the United States, even a well-established event in the cultural history of the musical Sullivan is recognized as a milestone on the backs of the show - 73 million visitors, 45 percent and 60 percent of the hierarchy is a translation of the television set.

Numbers tell the story. The individual memory differently. Yahoo! News asked readers to share and just think of all those collective experiences, but the Beatles in their lives, families and communities to change. Here are some excerpts minor edit what I wrote this week.

In February 1964, Anthony womb "Greasers and preppies out mixed Rat Pack," which holds the social ladder in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, he attended high school. Abraham was a leather jacket, air reflector and the Brylcreem hair Kelly said. Beatles music scenes foreshadowing the arrival of the womb and the first raised at the beginning of this cultural change as Elvis Presley. He writes:

Everything is tidy, inevitable, was locked. I believe that music has changed all that, when you look back, it seems strange now. The Beatles Elvis Presley their arrival in the United States of two of the most important concerts.

I attended Catholic school nuns Presley already has made a great impression. My colleague, George Pabst, a middle school cafeteria, the same scene in the last -alahtzaz crotch and Sister slammed by Donald got his fingers. The rest of us sniggered, and they, of course, was good.

Then came the Beatles!

"I want to hold your hand," while I waited for my father to return with groceries lime-green 1953 Ford was sitting outside the store in East Stroudsburg Jack came on the radio.

It started bopping around in my seat like crazy. My father saw me, he turned to ask my sanity. Everything looks pure excitement listening to the Beatles song and The Ed Sullivan Show, and later, when I can not even say that he was amused.

I suddenly. The rest of the "50s were placed in the missing leather jacket, and ducktails and spit curls, is replaced by the mop tops, and a new kind of Hebenas. Preppies culture as a new kind of social life suddenly pushed from behind, came on board ..

In 1964, Jacqueline Horsfall

According to Jacqueline Horsfall, February 9, the under fifteen. "Do not want to see the Beatles were on the TV screen.?" She asked her father to the couch, he replied: "What beetles?" Ed Sullivan, and her mother was surprised by the performance of the Beatles, when the clock has joined his father, "Horsfall said that they are not affected are written .:

I wrote in my diary that night:

Sunday, 9 February

Tonight was the Beatles Ed Sullivan Show. They are really different. The first haircut out of this world. I do not think it will last long, though.

Boy, you are wrong! Fairport, NY Minerva DeLand High School the next day:

Monday, February 10

All the children and teachers were talking about the Beatles. Their songs are ten of the top twenty.

Almost immediately, we began to imitate them:

Tuesday, February 11

After today's meeting of the church, everyone was acting like the Beatles. Marginal guys wore their hair, and we played the Beatles albums.

And fellow adventurer Beatles, The Ed Sullivan Show sell out at school

Tuesday, 18 February

We talked about the Beatles in English. I e, Paul, John is one of the two pictures.

The Beatles were the perfect moment to attack America. John F. Kennedy's assassination a few months ago, we were still in a state of shock. America, then, as I watched Jack Ruby, Lee Harvey Oswald, the accused assassin shot JFK. The Beatles, love their sweet songs and silly banter, gave us respite from violence:

Tuesday, February 25

Today is the birthday of George Harrison. We have lunch in the "Happy Birthday Holiday" sang.

In 1964, with her sister and mother, Fred Thomas III

., South of Los Angeles for the first time in 12 years for the Beatles Fred Thomas III-old "special" it was called The Ed Sullivan Show, "but he did not fully appreciate how the products will look culturally, she writes:

Month after month, year after year, you can feel the change in the air. The music we heard was the voice of cultural change, and enables us to see what we have been hearing, shows like Ed Sullivan.

It seems like yesterday when the Beatles were introduced. In addition to the Ed Sullivan Show, and our family is very popular because of the type, we knew that the provision of fair and African-American artists.

African-born American family, and we respect and embrace all people have raised. Events are happening very quickly and it was amazing how the music sounds to help people tolerate each other. Was in favor of accepting a new culture is synonymous with the Beatles show.

At the time, the Motown sound was influential music I heard in my community. Words affect our country was proud to help. However, in 1964, when the Beatles hit the scene, and they, too, fit right in.

60s "Laurie Jo Miller Farr family, especially Sunday night due to the display of Ed Sullivan. His father Farr, then 10, and his brother, aged 15 years and twin sister, 8-year-old to stay up late in front of the black and white groups Swanson TV dinners to eat them . before it is written:

Shockingly long, floppy hair and sideburns, despite the Beatles and well-groomed. They are coordinated through the joint electric guitar microphones because they wore suits, skinny trousers and skinny ties. We had to set glued. We are under the name of John, "Sorry girls, he's married," superimposed on the screen along with the words memorized their names.

I was jealous of a live audience of teenage girls. After all, it is one of those lucky girls Beatles single eye may be caught. Ed Sullivan Quad booked for three in a row on Sunday. He "or" praise "fine young people from Liverpool, England." And why not? The largest TV audience ever assembled to create.

The generation of cracks in the house. This group was not something new. They did not even have the wrong moves. And all the way from England!

My brother and I on the other hand, "I saw her standing there" with "I Want to Hold Your Hand" 45 RPM- buy at 47 cents in reserves for general piggy bank. It, too, they immediately loved the Beatles and my dad's in our hi-fi stereo turntable allowed to use. He took America by storm Beatlemania, and only the father angry objections.

In 1965, with his parents, Kathryn E. Darden

. Nourished mothers and children wore dresses: Kathryn E. Dardenne, then 9, and Falls Church, Virginia in 1964, his quiet middle class neighborhood '50s early' '60s series seem to reflect. Parents work. Families went to church, ate and drank. Crime and divorce was rare. The fire in the school does not exist. He writes:

The Beatles changed American music to bring something new to our shores. Wynonna and Phil Keaggy, as well as the future of Christianity, including the performance of the entire industry, not just a catchy pop voice was affected.

The new era of psychedelic music behind them and took over the last Beatles radical and destructive changes in American culture to help change the message. Beatles songs drugs, sex and rock and roll, and turbulence and the collapse of traditional values ??has become synonymous with.

As a child and teenager I liked the Beatles songs after changing their music and message, I stopped listening. Some of the high school and university friends who continue to greatly Beatles and drug abuse and other problems that affect the influence of the anti-cultural movement. Some live on the street from the house. I grew up in the community in an area where crime rates are high today.

In hindsight, I'm on their side of the pond of the Beatles' message would be counter-culture.

Who loves his mother - - The Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "I've said it again," Bobby Vinton cover the replacement of Mount Morris, Michigan State, and sixth grade, Tom Sanders 0.10 in 1964, as the number plate (1) Just days before the performance of Ed Sullivan song. Sanders on February 9, 1964, his mother and calling a watershed moment in the musical world. He writes:
Walter Street old brick brown junior high gym we were dancing at the gym. Older children have their 45s. In the seventh grade, "The Beatles Meet" to the album. (And became king of the whole school.) He did not see me or the film's first album was recorded the soundtrack for the children. Each song was great. We can not wait until our birthday, to ask if there was something new. It is preferred for the recorded music will replace our form as separate albums.
British became something cool. Children speak Scouse, or get a taste of the fish and chips. I had a short-wave radio and can listen to the World Service, told the BBC, and I gained a bit. The sixth grade girls ran in the other direction.
School bus radio as presented in the window seat. With the girls grabbed her radio, and the Beatles are seeking food a few minutes. Only children with a casual interest in radio commercials Louis up to now (in Flint WTAC) last Fab Four hit the good guys and Trix (WTRX) Jones Benin wait for the spin. In December, the transistor radio, as well as new items on the wish list for the Christmas holidays to join unequivocal.
Her song "Hello, Dolly" to his back when the Beatles got to break the chain of No. 1s. More and more popular music, however, be written for teens. Without grow with the band, I might have lost interest in the radio and music. I do not do it now, I listen to music, including The Beatles, I'm happy.
Miami, Florida, is already anti-war protests, demonstrations and a city flooded with hippies on February 9, Gail Cohen, then 21, a group of Beatles show host. At least for one night - to emerge as a political and ideological differences ,, Beatles Sullivan's show appeared to be frozen. He writes:
I cook large quantities of food and hostess uniform, a shirt, a mini skirt and go-go boots were made and spent a lot of time to choose. Friends laughing and felt the excitement. Shamelessly John, Paul, George and Ringo worn by men in puffy sky-high among girls who emulate the Stepford wives took complementary hairdressing. Who just returned from Vietnam - I'm only a few players wore close-cropped hair. It was a magical night.
Since then, the enthusiasm did not back down one iota. We have children and grandchildren and the murder of her apartment in NYC staying power, Paul, George, Ringo behind our life with songs of death remains painful and perseverance. With each successive generation, not shorten wonderful music and lyrics for the Beatles and the recognition of his work.
Even today, I have to remind myself - giddy with anticipation - I hear the theme song played on Ed Sullivan, we found out after the first minutes of cymbal tap and Ringo. We watched their every move. We know all the words, as we sang together.
We are aware that you may be witness to the history of that night?
